Anyone interested in touring the National Weather Center is encouraged to schedule tours 2 to 4 weeks in advance. NWC Security Guidelines require that foreign nationals (non-US citizens) arrange tours at least two weeks in advance in order to obtain the necessary security clearance. Foreign national individuals will be required to complete and submit a Foreign National Visitor form. The NWC Tour Coordinator will provide this form and assist in its completion. U.S. Government offices are resident in this facility. All persons entering those spaces are subject to federal policies, guidelines and regulations. All persons and packages are subject to inspection.
Tours may not be available on federal holidays, school holidays, and on occasion due to scheduled events. You must have a reservation to tour the NWC.
Tours of the NWC for the general public are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. Each tour typically lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. The Public tour is a comprehensive overview of the NWC affiliated units. This public tour includes visits to OU's School of Meteorology, the NWC Roof Top Observatory, classroom and laboratory facilities, as well as NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, the Norman National Weather Service Forecast Office, and the National Severe Storms Laboratory. If you have more than 8 people in your party, please schedule a group tour. If you or someone in your party has special needs, please let us know that when you schedule your tour.
We encourage you to book your tour as far in advance as possible as tours are typically full 1-2 weeks in advance of available dates. We apologize if we are unable to accommodate your requested date. .
Group Tours (35 max)
Tours of the NWC are offered for groups (parties of 9 or more) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am or 1pm and typically last 1 to 1.5 hours. Group tours are similar to public tours but allow for extra time for a question and answer session.
School Tours (35 max)
School tours are available for 3rd-12th grades only on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am or 1pm. School tours typically last 1.5 hours and consist of a presentation and video about the science conducted at the National Severe Storms Lab along with a visit to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center and Norman National Weather Service Forecast Office. Classes focusing on science are preferred guests. Schools are encouraged to schedule tours at least two weeks in advance as dates fill up quickly. Spring tour times fill up especially fast so scheduling as early as possible is strongly encouraged.
